People from Nature

A nossa viagem ao Quénia deu-nos a conhecer outra realidade. E aos quenianos também.  Quando lá chegamos não somos nós os únicos a querermos conhecê-los. Eles também nos querem conhecer. Das coisas mais engraçadas foi perceber que o próprio continente é muito diferente. Na Europa já não há tribos como em África. E só no Quénia há mais de 40 com os respectivos dialectos. 

Our trip to Kenya gave us conscience of another reality. It also gave it to Kenyans. When we got there we weren't the only ones wanting to know them. They also wanted to know us. One of the funniest things was to realize that the continent, itself, is very different. In Europe there is no such a think as tribes like in Africa. And just in Kenya, they have more than 40 tribes, with their respective dialects.

Actualmente, não se trata apenas de uma questão de necessidade. Em parte muitos preferem realmente continuar o seu estilo de vida. O mais estranho é que mesmo os indivíduos das tribos como os Masai, vão à escola e conhecem o mundo de uma forma mais ocidentalizada que as gerações anteriores. O guia que nos levou a uma das aldeias Masai estava prestes a entrar na universidade para o curso de medicina, mas optou por continuar a viver o estilo de vida da sua família. É sabido que a exploração turística destas aldeias que lhes fornece uma parte substancial dos rendimentos com os quais vivem (há muitas coisas que consomem para além dos produtos próprios). No entanto, ainda assim é muito difícil para nós perceber como é possível viver em condições tão precárias a duas horas em terra batida de qualquer civilização. É uma realidade tão diferente! No entanto, são estes que estão em pleno contacto com a Natureza na sua versão mais genuína e conhecem os seus tesouros como ninguém. Ainda assim, viver com pouco é um desafio para nós, europeus, mesmo quando se tem debaixo dos pés os tesouros da natureza. Para eles, ela é tudo, ela é Mãe.

Today, it is not just a matter of necessity. In many actually prefer to continue their lifestyle. The strangest thing is that even individuals from tribes like the Masai, usually go to school and know the world in a more westernized way than their previous generations. The guide who took us to a Masai village was about to go to the university to study medicine, but he chose to continue to live the lifestyle of his family. It is known that the tourism exploitation of these villages provides them a substantial part of their income ( there are many things they consume beyond the products they produce). However , it is still very difficult for us to realize how it is possible to live in such poor conditions, two hours away of any civilization. It's such a different reality! However, it is these communities are in full contact with Nature in its most genuine version and know her treasures as anyone. Still, with live with few possessions is a challenge for us Europeans, even if you have nature's treasures underfoot. For them, she is all, she is Mother.

Para mim foram uma inspiração neste caminho. Ainda que já não sejam genuínos de todo, deixaram-me a pensar na essência de viver assim. Não só pelo facto de viverem com menos, mas também pelo contacto com a Natureza e pela distância, pelo menos a necessária, a este mundo que nos leva.

They were an inspiration to me in this way. Even that they aren't genuine, it made me think about the essence of it. Not only because they live with less, but also because of their intimate contact with nature and the distance, at least  the necessary, from this world that is moving us too fast.
